Clothesline Haiku

A calico dress
slowly dances itself dry
in the washday breeze.

I've been thinking about my grandparents a lot lately. This came out of memories of my grandma and my great-aunt hanging laundry to dry on clotheslines in their back yard. They were so careful to keep the undergarments hung on the inner lines so that they neighbors wouldn't see them. Everything had to be hung up just right, most things were hung by their lower hems. In the winter the clothes were hung all over the basement, with an electric fan to circulate the air. It made it hard to get around down there, but at the same time it felt sort of exotic with the damp fabric brushing up against our faces.

In India, clothes are dried this way at most places. So I relate to this. The clothes give out a fresh smell after being sun-dried.

Yes, the fresh air does freshen the clothes. And did we ever get exercise if rain clouds rolled up while stuff was out on the line! It was a race against time and water to get the now-dried clothes dried before they got wet all over again!

Michele sent me here. It's weird how old memories can triggered by a familiar scenes... happened to me when I visited Taiwan last year. Haven't been back in over 10 years and memories kept coming back whenever I see something familiar.

Welcome, Tawcan. I like the way some memories are hidden behind other ones. Sometimes I dig into one and come up with stuff I had forgotten about.
