[a poem inspired by the Writers Island prompt, Haunted]
Socks
I like to match
my socks to my shirt.
But sometimes
the white ones
are haunted
by the taunting ghosts
of school children
from a time
when white socks
weren't cool.

LOL! What a fun poem! I love it! I still haven't forgiven my mom for buying me white tube socks as a kid. I was such a dorky kid. It had to be the socks! Right?
Hi, Herb. I'm sure it was the socks. We called them "flashers" back then.
Haaaaaaaaa that's great ;~) Thank YOU!
Oooh! Wonderful! It hits that exquisite pain from childhood and adolescence - the stuff that never goes away - but also makes me smile tenderly at the memory. Well done!
Thanks,
Hedwyg
Oh lol that's so funny. I can't get used to uniforms and white socks in NZ. In holland the children don't have them.
Thanks, Redness. Glad you liked it.
Hello, Hedwyg. I didn't know this was in my sock drawer until the prompt caught me.
Hi, Marja. Thanks!
OMG. My anklets from 7th grade. You know about them. No wonder I rarely where socks to this day. Loved this.
Most effective - an original but entirely justified take on haunting.
I also loved this and grinned widely! I totally think white socks can be cool again -- I'll wear mine tomorrow!
:)
Oh yeah, white socks so not cool over here. Fun!
exactly so - what a humorous take on the prompt!
Great take on prompt! White socks? Wooo! Bad news!
I could relate to this so much, reminds of the time spend in Britain where white socks are still not cool and everytinme I look at a pair, I hesitate - haunted :) Thank you, I loved it.
I still shudder a bit when I cross my legs and my white socks show. But as I've aged, I've gotten less and less concerned with proper fashion. I sometimes scare myself when I look in the mirror!
AnnieElf, of course I know about them, but I won't tell anyone.
Hello, Dick. Thanks.
Hey, Clare. I'll smile thinking of you in white socks.
Hello, Jo. I didn't know the uncoolness was so widespread.
Thanks, Pauline and Keith.
UL - I may smile myself at my own white socks for a while, now that I know there are so many of us.
Hi, June. I've let a lot of things go, but sometimes those ghosts still surprise me.
Oh this really got me. Yes, to white socks. Fun turn on the prompt.
haha Fun post! do you know I STILL wear black socks under sneakers?? Some stigmas never die!
Hi, Deb and Lucy. I think we may just need a "white socks day" for all of us to flaunt those ghosts - on the other hand, that's probably even uncooler than the socks were in the first place.
That is priceless! I am wiping my tears!
Thanks, Gautami. I'm delighted.
white socks...shudder! Altho they are nice when you're working out!
Hi, Michele sent me :-)
I LIKE white socks. But they have to be really white. I don't much care for the dingy looking ones.....
Too funny! Would be even funnier if I weren't reading this while wearing...oh, never mind. Good post!
Hello, Janet. All socks have a time and a place.
Hi, Maria. I do have 6 or 8 pairs of white socks, myself.
Welcome, Rebicmel. I'm glad you liked it.
Thanks, Tumblewords. I giggled reading your comment!
I enjoyed that one. :)
Very precise and honest. Nt just remembering..but a moment of there, past.
Hi, NPW, and thanks.
Thanks, Wendy. Just so.
very cute and true... i do think of being eight or so whenever i pull on a pair...
Oh, I like this.
And I like matching clothes, for fun. :)

Welcome, KaraMia. Thanks.
Thanks, Shephard. My former boss always knew I was in a good mood when my socks matched my shirt.
I love this! I'm still traumatized by knee socks that always fell down because the elastic had worn out.
Thanks, Colleen. Who knew socks could keep such a hold on us?
